Ille de Pan - Knysna

Bread from heaven

If the summer sunshine, upcoming December break, coastal vibe and escaping the rat race aren’t good enough excuses to get out of Jo’burg, then the food scene down in the Cape surely is.
So we’ve decided to share some of our favourite coastal gems with you that are sure to make your trip just that more enjoyable.

This time our taste buds took us to Knysna, referred to by some as the best city in SA, whilst others regard it as a hippies paradise.
Either way, if you’re hungry while visiting or just passing through the town, be sure to stop over at the esteemed Ile de Pain on Thesen Island. They’ve developed the concept of a restaurant-come-bakery perfectly, where not only will you indulge in a great, casual meal, but you will more than likely leave with some of their delectable bakery products as well – if they’re not all sold out...
The great thing about this spot is that you actually watch the guys making the bread/croissants you’re eating – so not only are you assured of the freshest food, but it adds to the entertainment factor/experience as well.

The fillet steak on rye bread is one of our favourites - grilled to perfection with caramelised onions and of course the yummiest rye bread! The sandwich samplers are also a great way to try out the different breads baked here, with great toppings. The menu changes regularly, but the taste sensations are always interesting, and delicious. Make sure you leave space for the decadent deserts though – again combining freshness with great taste...

Not only does Ile de Pain get the DimitrION thumbs up, but our highly critical baker friends the Poulos’ also love it!

Tip: They don’t take bookings and it gets really busy during the December break, so get there early or be prepared to wait a while – not a bad thing considering all the unique shops surrounding the restaurant.

Bay Leaf and Sage - JHB

Your friendly deli

Our search for little gems across Joburg took us to the latest extension of our favourite neighbourhood, Athol. The new “Blu Bird” centre adds a modern look to a once run down area. We did lunch at a homely styled deli called Bay Leaf and Sage. What we liked initially appreciated was the friendly service from Mark and co-owner Jean.
We went with our usual group of friends: Nick, Dave, Deanna, Gerrard, Maria and Sasha. The group started off with the antipasti platter: a variety of cold meats, cheeses and olives served stylishly on a wooden chopping block (Go for the almond filled olives, the best!). Dimitri ordered a sarmie filled with Parma ham, gorgonzola and pear on rye bread with a side order of thinly sliced fries and tzatziki- yummy.
The others ordered savoury crepes filled with chicken. Sasha had the wrap filled with lamb called Mary's Little Lamb, which was a little bland and needed a little more tzatziki or humus. To end off we had our traditional espresso (one of the few places you can still get an espresso for R10) and a delectable bar-one cheese cake - with 7 spoons.
